Bushman of the western Kalahari (5 Days)

If you’re looking for cultural immersion, this tour is the one for you. Spending time with the people, in their realm, is the best way to understand their culture. This tour is recommended for those looking to participate in traditional African village life, with plenty of opportunities to interact with the locals.

This adventure begins and ends at Maun International Airport, in Botswana.

Upon your arrival at Maun International Airport, you will be met by a representative who will assist you with your luggage and boarding for your scheduled light aircraft flight to Xai Xai Airstrip, in the Western Kalahari. Once you’ve landed you’ll be joined by a qualified zoologist/biologist, who will be your guide throughout your adventure, and driven to a secluded campsite, deep in the ancestral gathering lands of the Zu/’hoasi Bushmen.

Spend four nights in a remote campsite comprised of traditional Bushmen grass shelters. Each shelter boasts a comfortable bed with adjacent private bucket showers and bush loos.

In the afternoon you can enjoy a gentle stroll to a nearby Bushmen village to view the day to day interactions of these fascinating people.

Today, after a scrumptious breakfast, you’ll strap on your hiking boots for a guided walk into the wilderness with your guide and the nearby villagers to experience the Bushmen way of life. Your guide will point out the distinct ecological characteristics of this area and fascinating animal and bird species. The Bushmen will also provide insight on their use of plants for culinary and medicinal use. You’ll also be able to help the bushmen collect a selection of plants that will be prepared for your lunch back at the campsite.

After a lunch filled with Bushmen fare, retreat to your hut for a well-deserved siesta before returning to the village for a lesson in jewellery making and food preparation. As the day draws to an end, delight in a traditional melon dance preformed by the women of the village, which represents the joyful celebration of a successful harvest.

After a restful night’s sleep, meet the men from the village after breakfast to prepare for a traditional hunt. This adventure will entail seeking out the necessary tools such as poison grub beetles, roots, sanseveria leaves and branches, which they will use to make rope, bows and arrows.

In the afternoon you will return to the village for a lesson in bow, arrow and quiver making. Afterwards, view a demonstration, from the young men of the village, on their various traditional games that provide training for the hand-to-eye coordination skills that will be necessary for the next day’s hunt.

It’s an early start today as you depart after a hearty cooked breakfast for an adventure-filled day of hunting with the men from the village. Track, stalk and, hopefully, hunt down some wild quarry using traditional bows and arrows — stopping along the way for a delicious picnic lunch.

The following morning you will bid the community farewell as you are driven back to the Xai Xai airstrip for your light aircraft flight to Maun International Airport.
