Lake Elmenteita Serena Camp, situated on the shoreline of sapphire--‐blue Lake Elmenteita, is less than two hours’ drive from Nairobi. Styled to echo the area’s rich history, the camp blends aristocratic elegance with modern luxury. The nomadic Maasai passed through the area for centuries and the name Elmenteita derives from the Maasai Ol muteita; “place of dust”. In 1897 Baron Delamere, settled in the area and began farming in the Rift Valley. He moved to Elmenteita in 1906, where started sheep and cattle ranching, assisted by the local Maasai. He named his farm Soysambu, Maasai for “striated rock”. Today, Soysambu is a 48,000-acre Wildlife Conservancy. The alkaline lake’s rocky islands are the only East African nesLng site for great white pelicans, while its algae and plankton provides food for vast flocks of flamingos and a multitude of other waterfowl. The Conservancy protects over 450 bird species and 15,000 wild animals. Rothschild giraffes have found a safe haven for breeding, while a diverse variety of terrain shelters many species --‐ from herds of giant elands to tiny dik diks and cliff‐dwelling klipspringers.

Laid out along the banks of the Sabaringo River on the edge of the Oloololo Escarpment, where the final scene from “Out of Africa” was filmed, Kichwa Tembo looks out onto the endless plains of the Masai Mara National Reserve. Set on a private concession leased from Maasai landlords in the less populated northern part of the Mara, the camp offers seclusion and abundant wildlife. Forty spacious tents are laid out in immaculate grounds, with warthog feeding outside the tents. Hammocks strung in the grounds or around the gracious swimming pool invite you for an afternoon nap.
